Mission
Brewery
The original Mission
Brewery opened in 1913 and as soon as 1917, was shut down due
to Prohibition. It was never reopened as a brewing facility,
but in fact became a seaweed processing plant owned for decades
by the American Agar Company.
Mike Foote purchased
the Mission Brewery in 1988 with the intention of demolishing
the building and constructing a new office plaza. After learning
more about the old brick structure, Foote decided to approach
his new project as a historic renovation of the building that
was designed by the famous German Brewery Architect, Richard
Greisser. Foote’s plan included registration of the building
on the National Registry of Historic Places.
The Mission
Brewery Plaza features 40,000 square feet of low-rise garden
style office space over a parking garage, and the renovation
of the original 35,000 square foot masonry structure. The tower
of the plaza, restored to its original appearance, received
the 1990 San Diego People in Preservation Award for Commercial
Restoration.
